ADHD Tests (And Why I Finally Took One)
What I thought was just my personality might have a name.
I decided to get tested for ADHD.
For years, people have said I do a lot. And it’s true. I produce shows, write jokes, perform, work a day job, and take care of my family. I thought I managed it all because I love what I do. I also thought my struggles were just part of my personality.
Then I learned more about ADHD.
A lot of my patterns, going back to childhood, started to make sense. The strengths. The challenges. Even some of the coping strategies I have been using. And, some simple supports actually help.
Many adults, especially women, go undiagnosed for years. ADHD does not always look like what people expect. It can look like losing track of time, taking on too much, or struggling to finish one task while thinking about ten others.
So now I am going through the testing process to better understand how my brain works, and how to work with it.
I’ve also started writing new jokes about this experience. I will be testing them on Thursday, March 26 at Off the Rails Comedy at Clocktower Brew Pub in Westboro, Ottawa (418 Richmond Road). There is an early show at 7 pm and a late show at 9:30 pm. Here’s where you can get your tickets. Use the code “DAWN” at checkout to save 5%. If you have ever wondered about ADHD, you are not alone.
Stay tuned.
