Laughs with a side of Jollof

Introducing the Suya Laffs Open Mic

I’m helping build a new comedy room inside a Nigerian restaurant — and it’s called Suya Laffs. We hosted our first open mic on Friday, March 13 at Suya Royale.

If you’re new to comedy, an open mic is where comedians test new jokes, practice their timing, and try out material in front of a live audience.

For this soft launch, we kept it clean, with comedians performing for all audiences. Think live comedy paired with — what one person called — “the best Jollof rice in the city”.

A snowstorm cut into the crowd, but the energy in the room was strong and the feedback was positive. We’ll be back in April with a standard open mic for mature audiences.

If you’re a comedian, keep an eye out for sign-ups. If you’re an audience member, come hungry for laughs and great West African food. For more information, email: dawn.xanklin.comedy@gmail.com.
